So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.
For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/
Do not copy my example.
I think that when were between the ages of 14-18, we want to know what people are doing and we want to belong in a group or school, so we stay glued to our phones and we always check social media, because we want to belong, and since everyone has a phone, when we go on our phone and when we see others with a phone, we bring out our phone, so we also have a device in font of us. Also i think that since now a days everyone has a phone, when we don't have a phone and we don't bring it out, we feel bad about our selves because we know that you look like your sitting by yourself and your just staring off in space, and you think of yourself like a loser because everyone has a phone and your just sitting there without one.
ReplyDeleteSocial anxiety is a big proponent of why we have accepted the cell phone as a crutch for "loneliness". But studies show it only contributes more to feeling alone. According to this study, "students who have mobile phone use 10 or over ten hours, 7-9 hours, 4-6 hours and 1-3 hours were found to have more loneliness score than those who have
Deletemobile phone use less than 1 hour per day." http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877042813038238
It is very common for adolescents to struggle with their physical appearance. Technology does not exactly help these young teenagers overcome these insecurities. As a matter of fact, they do the opposite and may be the cause for so many insecurities amoungst young adults. According to Forbes, "A 2016 study out of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine surveyed 1,787 U.S. millennials and found that subjects who reported the most frequent use of social media had 2.7 times more likelihood of depression than those who used it less frequently." Students should not use a phone during school because it would entirely distract them from the lesson in which the teacher is teaching to the class. If students were to use phones during school they would get no work done and not learn essential information needed later on in life. According to The Huffington Post, "It’s therefore not surprising that a recent London School of Economics study found that schools which ban the use of phones experienced a substantial improvement in student test scores, with the researchers concluding that phones “can have a negative impact on productivity through distraction.”There would also be no way of completely knowing what the student is doing on that phone, but based on what kids use their phones for these days, it is most likely that they are on social media or another app that has nothing to do with school. Kids have all the information in the world at the touch of their fingertips, yet they decide to use the phone for simple and useless acts such as funny cat videos, movies or any kind of entertainment in general.

Great work Em. Well written and researched. It's not just kids however, as we discussed in class.
DeleteI think many people from ages 14-18 years old are affected by social media in one way or another. They want to look good in every post and might change their appearance because it makes them feel insecure. All people these ages usually try very hard to fit in. Also, phones can disrupt people's sleep and then they can't function like they normally the next day. Phones aren't always negatively used and can be used to communicate with people and for entertainment.

Good Amelia. However, in the future use your source to support your opinion.
DeleteI think that middle adolescence is the time in which kids should get a phone. Around that time frame is usually when kids start to go about on their own, so giving kids a phone then is a good idea. You would be able to call them to make sure they're okay and check to see where they are. It's mainly just for safety, but it also makes the kids happy.
ReplyDeleteSource: http://www.pbs.org/parents/childrenandmedia/article-when-should-you-get-kid-cell-phone.html
I like where you are going with drawing an age limit on when a child should get a phone. However there is no evidence to support that phones make us happier. In fact studies are showing that cell phones are making us more unhappy and lonelier. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/smores-and-more/201401/excess-cell-phone-usage-reduces-happiness
DeleteI think that middle adolescence is when people really start to get active on social media and technology. And most kids get phones this age as well. As everyone knows phones are not allowed in school and teachers won't be changing that rule no matter how much technology advances they won't allow them in school. Phones are very distracting which is one of the main reasons why they are not allowed in school. Cell phones are also not allowed because if students have their phones with them while they are taking a test they might be tempted to cheat.

Good Natalie. Be careful with your sources. It was difficult to tell who created that Prezi and make sure you use more qualified studies based in fact to support your opinions.
DeleteTeens already are on there phone using social media or any app they use. They tend to loose thoughts and surroundings. Social media has become in my opinion the biggest distraction for adolescence. They consume to much of their time. They cant concentrate, pay attention to surroundings, and in some cases some kids get anxiety when they don't have there phones. Its like they get trapped the minute they turn on there phone. For example they want to look good in every post and so when a person looks better then them they change there appearance and themselves in the inside. Most teens try to fit in now a days and at the same time they might ruining themselves because they aren't happy. Phones aren't bad, because people use it to communicate with other people and to entertain themselves.

Good Angelina. I agree with your assumptions but use your source to support your opinions. Your source discussed a lot about the dangers of too much exposure to RF frequencies and their effects on sleep time, etc. Which is a little different than what your talking about. They can be connected but make that connection. Be sure to spell check your submissions in the future.

ReplyDeleteDuring middle adolescence, most teens are trying to understand what they are meant to do on this
planet and where they belong. This can put a lot of pressure on them which is why sometimes they
can choose the wrong groups or do the wrong things. Social Media is something mostly every
young person in this generation uses that gives an illusion of what they are supposed to look like,
what opinions they should have, and what they should be doing to fit in. Most people I know that
are my age have at least one social media account which they are very invested in. Along with
most teens having social media, most teens also have phones. Phones are very useful in this day
and age. People use them for almost anything, but it becomes a problem when people can’t stop
using them. Phones are very distracting things that require most of your attention when being used.
One place where phones can be a distraction for teens is at school. Teens could use phones for
educational purposes in school but most times that’s not the case. Students use their phones during
class to escape learning and see what their friends or favorite celebrities are doing, which is a
very bad thing to do when their teacher is at the front of the room saying important information.
Students who could be struggling in a certain class can be distracted by their peers who use their phones which can end up in those students grades worsening. Dr. Richard Murphy, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Texas reports to the Huffington Post that “allowing phones into schools would be the most damaging to low-achieving and low-income students, exacerbating any existing learning inequalities.” It is not fair for a student who wants to learn to be distracted by someone who doesn’t care about their education. Phones also disconnect people from the world around them. Some people could go a whole day without interacting with others and just stay inside with their phones or laptops. Christine Rosen reports for the New York Post that “...kids already spend most of their waking hours staring at screens. Shouldn’t we try to preserve some spaces at school for the cultivation of other valuable skills, such as face-to-face communication and socializing?” School isn’t just a place for kids to learn about math skills or history, they also learn basic skills such as talking with others or public speaking. Teens have to take a break from their phones during school so they can not only relax from all the pressure on social media, but learn.

Excellent and eloquently stated Melanie.
DeleteIn middle adolescence teens are trying to figure out who they are. So by them trying to figure out who they are they start exploring things such as social media. Most teens have cell phones already. One pro for cell phones are that its a good learning tool. Instead of bringing a heavy textbook you can use your phone as a book or as anything really. One con about using cell phones is that teen may use them in school to cheat, which is not good. Phones can be very distracting at times but they can be very good at times too.
ReplyDeleteGood Juliana. In middle adolescence, young people are beginning to develop independence. Weighing pros and cons is helpful but use facts to support your work in the future. Have evidence.
DeleteI think that students should not be able to use phones in school for multiple reasons. One reason is that it will distract students from learning. Since they are always on their phone they should get a break at least during school and learn. Also using phones in class can distract others.

Good Malak. But what particularly about adolescent development are you most concerned with addressing? We will discuss distraction more in depth in our next post.
DeleteI believe that cell phones should not be permitted in school due to distracting content. For example, students might choose to visit irrelevant websites, listen to distracting music, or use this to do things such as cyber bully others. In addition to this people of the age groups of 14-18 may soon be isolating themselves, and placing information on the internet without consent of their parents. They are becoming independent and place many things online that may be tracked. Therefore, things like this are distracting in school.

Good Elisa, but what particularly about adolescent development are you worried about distraction affecting? What did you learn from your research?
DeleteDuring adolescence teens are hook on the media now a days. They all want to know what is the new trend so they can join in on it. Teens are so worried on what is going on they forget about important things and school. Phones are used during school and they distract students. They give teachers excuses to go on their phone and check snapchant, instagram, tumbler and ect. Years ago teachers only had to ask one student to put their phone away. Now a days teachers have to ask mutilpe students to do so. These things affect test scores.

During the adolescence of a teenager, phones are absolutely everything. Having a phone can contribute to growing up and being more responsible. Also if something was supposed to happen its important that someone can get a hold of someone right away. Teens learn how to be more professional like checking emails. And certain students learn better with using a modern device.

I think that teenagers shouldn't use their phone a lot because they start going online and some might do things they aren't suppose to. For teenagers a phone is like their best friend, they use it for everything everywhere. I personally use my phone for everything but using my phone is helpful and st the same time it isn't. It is useful because some parents can track you from your phone. A lot of people take advantage of their phone and use it for horrible things. I think that people should limit themselves.
ReplyDeleteIn the journey of adolescence, teenagers might be exposed to the digital world through computers, cell phones, and other technological devices. Once a teenager is exposed to their very first cell phone and the internet, they might become attached to it and want to have it with them every second of every single day, and that starts the problem. The internet might pressure teenagers to perform actions and post things online that may hurt them in some way. Other teenagers, and adults too, take advantage of their use of the internet and use it for malicious activities, which also creates another set of issues. The only logical solution the problems of the digital world to make it a safer environment for everyone is to educate ourselves on what is right and set limits and boundaries for everyone.

DeleteI think this will affect our normal learning and will distract our attention. So that we can not study well. But the phone can help us to contact the family, which is good. But for our studies, or not with a cell phone.
