- 1.a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else."the company found passenger travel a distraction from the main business of moving freight"
Growing up in America today is to be a part of a society that is rapidly and constantly changing. The fact is you are surrounded by technology and information and spend a large portion of your time interacting with it. But what is it doing to your brain?
As we saw from the video in class, our brains are not wired for multi-tasking. Some tasks require more concentration than others and when we switch between many tasks we lose focus.
Specific Instructions: For this post think about something you do that requires your full attention. Then think about your habits with technology while trying to concentrate. Do you listen to music while doing homework? Is that bad? Do you respond to texts while doing homework? Then go online and find evidence to support your response. Please include the link to the site you use in your response. -5 points if you respond with no link. Do not copy other people's posts, ideas or links. You will get a 0 for plagiarizing.
If you missed the video in class please watch the first 8:40 minutes of this documentary:
Sample post:
I like to listen to music while I do homework. It helps me to relax and focus. After reading this article (https://gradeslam.org/blog/does-listening-to-music-help-with-studying) I learned...
Almost every night I have homework to do after school. Most times I'm completely focused doing it, but other times I'll have something distracting me. For example, sometimes I listen to music or watch Netflix or YouTube while doing homework. I do admit that it slows me down, but I do it anyway because I find homework to be so boring on it's own. The article: https://www.oxfordlearning.com/study-without-getting-distracted-tips/ further explains how bad it is to distract yourself while doing homework and also includes some solutions. I will try to take these suggestions into consideration since I know that what I've been doing is not good.
ReplyDeleteNice Emily. Use your findings to help shape better habits. You'd probably finish homework a lot faster if you weren't distracted.
DeleteWhen I do homework I sometimes listen to music which I feel like helps me focus and concentrate. I think it depends on the music you listen to because if you listen to classical it is easier to study because it doesn't have words. After reading this article, I think you should not listen to anything or watch anything because it will not help you memorize and learn.

The problem with listening to music is that words can be distracting. If you are listening to music without words there have been studies that show it can improve your ability for short periods of time. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20130107-can-mozart-boost-brainpower
DeleteWhile I do some homework I always listen to music or sometimes Youtube videos. I believe for me whenever i listen to music it helps me to relax and focus. After reading this article :(https://patch.com/minnesota/burnsville/should-students-listen-to-music-while-doing-homework) it explains that it is never good to listen to music because its very distracting. Its the lyrics and the words we hear. It also it explains the the more you listen to music the more it reduces your test scores and classes.
ReplyDeleteYour source wasn't very helpful since it did not include anything factual evidence. It was opinions by individuals. Be careful to use peer reviewed information to inform yourself.
DeleteI love to be on Facetime or watch Netflix while i'm doing my homework or studying. I love my friends and sometimes i feel like its helps me to relax and study more if that person can help me. Netflix is a way for me to multitask. i can watch my show and do my homework at the same time so that i don't get bored but still do my work. After looking at this article, https://www.beyondbooksmart.com/executive-functioning-strategies-blog/distracted-by-technology-focusing-attention-on-homework I learned that when i distract myself or multitask with my phone it takes a longer time for me to get my work done. Also, i cant remember any of the material I did or were supposed to do at home.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Yanese. Focusing your attention will have many benefits. Including remembering more and finishing your work faster, so there's more time for your friends.
DeleteThough I do not respond to texts or go on social media while doing home work because of the distraction it is to me, listening to classical music (occasionally grunge) while cooking or playing video games helps me to concentrate more and motivates me to even work harder on the task. This is not a bad thing because it does not distract me like texts or social media world, instead it helps me focus more on my work. I learned from the article, http://www.limelightmagazine.com.au/Article/369217%2Cclassical-music-improves-concentration-and-social-skills.aspx, that classical music not only helps concentration, but it also "can aid in developing better concentration levels, self-discipline and social skills."
ReplyDeleteGood work Em.
DeleteSometimes when I am doing homework I like to listen to music and sometimes I talk to my friends on face time. When I listen to music while I do homework it helps me concentrate more and sometimes it gives me a little boost and gets me in a good mood while I am doing homework so I can do a better job on my homework instead of being stressed and not do as well. When I face time my friends if I have a question I could easily ask them and see if they could help me. After reading this article https://www.freshu.io/destiny/5-reasons-why-you-should-listen-to-music-while-doing-homework I learned that listening to music actually helps you to focus and study.
ReplyDeleteInteresting findings Natalie. Be careful though many studies have shown that music with lyrics can be just as distracting as watching a movie. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20130107-can-mozart-boost-brainpower

ReplyDeleteEvery day when I do my homework I like to either listen to music or be on a face time call with one of my friends. The reason why I like to do this is because is makes me focus more on what i'm doing. What I mean by it helps me be more focused is that when I have music playing it kind of blocks the noises in the background that I might have. Music helps me be more motivated on what I am doing. When I am listen to music while doing my homework it helps me memorize what i'm reading or what i'm writing. http://blog.online.colostate.edu/blog/online-education/3-reasons-you-should-try-studying-while-listening-to-music/
ReplyDeleteGood source Juliana. Interesting findings. It is important to point out that not all music is beneficial. Especially harmful can be music with lyrics.
DeleteEvery time I do my homework something is always distracting me. That distraction is my phone when it gets a notification every time. I get distracted then it takes me longer to do my homework or remember what I should be focusing on. I'm either on social media, texting/calling, or shopping for something. This article http://www.bbc.com/news/education-33047927 gave me clear statement that its not good for students to multitask especially when doing homework. It explains that phones are clearly a distraction and can lead to effecting our grades too.
ReplyDeleteGood job Malak. Turning off Notifications is a great start.
DeletePersonally, I do not listen to music or respond to texts while I am doing any form of school work. In my opinion, I believe that it is very distracting. In addition, I believe that it is important for me just to get all my work done at once. Personally, I am the type of person that whenever I have an assignment due, I try to focus my full attention into it. Therefore, I do not believe in multitasking, because it may cause you from not accomplishing something to the fullest. For example, you may not be able to carry out a certain task the right way because you may choose to multitask.

Well done Elisa. This was a powerful finding in your research: "IQ drops of 15 points for multitasking men lowered their scores to the average range of an 8-year-old child."
DeleteUsually when I do my homework, everything becomes a distraction for me. It’s either a notification from my phone or watching the TV for a few minutes that causes me to lose all concentration. Every time I’m given a homework assignment I try my best to complete it to the best of my ability. It is hard for me to do that when a lot of things are happening all around. For example, most times when I start my homework I’m listening to music. The problem with that is I pay more attention to the song than what I’m typing or writing down. My phone is one of my biggest distractions because once I respond to one text message, I’m on my phone for the next 15 minutes. “The problem is that alerts can break our concentration, whether or not we take action on them straight away — if you hear (or feel) that a text has come in, then the likelihood is you’ll start wondering who it’s from, what it might say and how you could respond.” I just hear my phone buzz and feel the need to go on it. Sometimes I randomly go on my phone while doing homework just because it’s in front of me. Personally, I think to better improve my working it’s better for me to be away from my phone in a quiet area.

Nice work Melanie.
DeleteI love listening to music while studying. It helps me focus when it is going on.It relaxes me and make me want to focus. A lot of people say it is not go to because it is a distraction. It makes studying more fun. No one really wants to study and not have music will be super boring. This was proven to improves a student's grade. Music makes you smarter also. The Mozart effect is real. It does really help retain information.

Good Lauren but be careful. "beneficial effects of certain type of music." Meaning music without lyrics can provide a benefit while music with lyrics can present a distraction.
DeleteI listen to classical music while studying or I just don't use anything. I use classical music because the sound of the music is very relaxing and it helps me focus more. While I do my homework I go to my room and do it i really don't use anything only for studying. As I do my homework I just need silence so I can consentrate more.

Personally, I think it is very useful and helpful.
Good Makarena.
DeleteFor most teenagers who have been exposed to advanced technology from a young age, we have learned the art of multi-tasking, whether our brains were specifically designed to do so or not. We seem to not understand that for most things, our full concentration is required for it. A distraction, like a cell phone, while doing your homework means you're multi-tasking, and not in a way that is beneficial. In school, most teachers will not allow the usage of cell phones as it can be a major distraction from learning.

ReplyDeleteWhen i do my homework, i will listening the music. Because i think it s can help me focus when its going on.
ReplyDeleteGood Cindy. Use research to help learn. Music without lyrics is helpful for focus. But music with lyrics can be harmful.
DeleteWhen i play basketball, i like to listen to a certain playlist to motivate me to do better and to encourage me to use more energy. Sometimes i use no music so that way during a game when its crazy i don't need music to help me play basketball. when i practice basketball, my mind is on basketball and only basketball its not on texting or social media. i think that when my mid is focused on certain things i can do a lot more than if i was multitasking because my mind is focused on one thing, which is playing and i don't have anything to distract me, i just have a ball, and the court.

Good job Alina. I like that you chose sports to focus on and here we can see real benefits for music as a motivator, etc.
