Digital Literacy Continued

This is a continuation of our previous post regarding information literacy. Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:
  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product disguised as a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following two website banners and answer this question:

Which are these an example of: native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  5. I think they are both news stories because they give viewers facts about things that are going on today. You can also tell that they are news stories because they aren't trying to promote anything but just showing what is going on in this world.

  7. The information given in the advertisements leads me to believe that they are both news stories. They both have factual information in them, such as the percentages of female computer science graduates in different years in the second ad. They aren't promoting anything either, all the information is on the ad and nothing is hidden.

  8. I think that these two advertisements are an example of news story because the first ad contains actual information on why California should not grow almonds and they're not promoting anything they're explaining why they should not grow almonds anymore, the other advertisement explains why women dont go into tech and even though they're not including actual facts but it includes specific reasons why women don't go into tech.

  10. These would be set up as news articles because when you were to click on them they would be explaining and sharing the statement that is stated in the advertisement. It is not a traditional advertisement because it is no showcasing a brand or company, rather giving us an option to click their link and read the article(on the topic listed)
