School Shootings

Welcome back!!!  Not exactly a fun nor easy topic but one I think must be discussed. On February 14 a 19 year old former student walked into Stoneman Douglas High School and killed 17 students and teachers. He also injured 14 people. Without any weapons training he was legally able to purchase a Ar-15 semi automatic rifle. A weapon capable of firing 20 shots in 9 seconds.  Here's some more facts:

Address the questions following in your post:
  1. Why do you think these incidents keep happening?
  2. What is your initial reaction when you hear about an event like this?
  3. What do you think should be done to help ensure things like this can be avoided?

  1. 1.Why do you think these incidents keep happening?
These shootings can happen because firearms are not well managed abroad.

2.What is your initial reaction when you hear about an event like this?
I am saddened by the families of those who died. This is a very important thing, related to our lives.

3.What do you think should be done to help ensure things like this can be avoided?
I think we should control the firearms and not let dangerous guns fall into the hands of illegal elements. Also educate children about the dangers of guns.

  2. 1. Why do you think these incidents keep happening?
i think its because people think that they can get away with it, and nothing is being done about the school shooting.

    2. what is your initial reaction when you hear about an event like this?
i get sad cause a lot of people died, and it effected their family and friends, and if i were in the same spot, i would be very very sad.

    3. What do you think should be done to help ensure things like this can be avoided?
i think that we should learn about the dangers of the gun, and do drills if a school shooter entered the building. we should also make owning a gun harder.

  3. Why do you think these incidents keep happening?

There are schools with no protection. In areas where you wouldn't think shootings will happen are the most targeted. I feel like there should be more security and responders like police should be on the lookout for hints that might indicate something.

What is your initial reaction when you hear about an event like this?

I feel bad for the people but anger towards the shooter and the shooters parents. Often times on the news they report and say the shooter has a mental illines. I feel no way towards that mostly because if a person has any kind of mental issue they should be highly surveillanced. If they didn't have money to send them to a treatment center, They should be watched at all times and certainly not have weapons in the house.

What do you think should be done to help ensure things like this can be avoided?

Metal detectors and security that they put in schools in the five boroughs should be used other places as well. The metal detectors would help to detect any type of object. And paying more attention to your surroundings.

  4. these incidents keep happening because of the little discipline and control over guns in our country. Honestly, my initial reaction was not surprised. I did not feel surprised that this happened again, although I do feel a bit disheartened, I feel nothing different. What should be done to avoid another mishap like this is to illegalize assault guns. (except for the military/special forces)

  5. The reason the incidents keep happening is because the lack of control in the US when it comes to guns. To be honest im not surprised because i know everyday, every minute or probably every second somebody is shooting a school, a company or even people for example the citizens. I feel what should be done is that they need to put a stop to buying illegal guns or guns that are to big. Like they should a reccomedation for guns

  6. The reasons this keeps happening is because people keep buying illegal weapons. When I first heard this I was surprised because shootings at schools continue to happening and aren't being effectively stopped. I feel like the government should ban guns unless its for a legitimate reason.

  7. 1. I think these incidents keep happening because there aren't strict enough rules on how you can obtain a gun.

    2. My initial reaction to events like this is shock. I don't understand why someone would hurt innocent students and teachers for no reason.

    3. I think that stricter rules on how you can obtain a gun should be enforced immediately.

  8. 1.I think this incidents keep happening because the government is not strict enough with the gun laws. Almost anyone can have access to guns.

    2. My internal reaction to this is disappointed but not surprised at all. Knowing that this could happen at anywhere anytime because our laws are not strict you would expect things like this to keep happening.

3.LIke I mention stricter laws, more security, and schools should have more drills that will help students if this ever were to happen in their school.

  9. I think these accidents keep happening because there isn't enough security and people can buy guns extremely easily with no background check.
My initial reaction was to be horrified, disgusted, and sad. This is all very wrong.
I think guns should be in tighter control and security should be tighter. Even if the person cant be stopped the extra security couldn't hurt.

  10. 1. These incidents keep happening because the government isn't serious about gun control and doesn't care about preventing future attacks.

    2. I feel very upset and angry when I hear these things happen but I'm more angry because I know that it doesn't matter to the government because their 2nd amendment right is more important than children dying.

    3. There need to be more background checks and huge rifles shouldn't be sold at all because no one needs those.

  11. 1) i personally think these things keep happening because people(seller) are sometimes selling things just for the money and don't really care what the buyer is planning to do with the weapon.
    2) I had multiple different reactions, some of them were sad, disgusted, scared, worried, etc. I was worried about the innocent families that were affacted and the kids that were injured.
    3) SOMETHING has to be done because stuff like this can't be happening. There have been so many school shootings and we need to put a stop to this, people are dying, suffering, and hurt.

  12. 1. I think these incidents keep happening because anyone can get a gun these days. There's no restrictions in getting them.
    2. I'm disappointed when I hear this because this keeps happening and people talk about for a little then forget about it.
    3. The government should get a law on who can and can't get a gun. And have better security

  13. 1.I think that these horrible things happen because gun sellers are making it way too easy to access a gun.
    2. My initial reaction was actually no reaction was actually no reaction at all because I have become emune to the constant violance in our society today.
3.I think that guns should no be given to teachers it is horrile to have someone train for that. But on the other hand i would understand how easy it is to get a gun if you need protection.I think that they should do mental health cheacks before selling a gun.

  15. Why do you think these incidents keep happening?
I think these incidents keep happening because there aren't strict enough gun laws. Teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to have access to firearms because teenagers are way to emotionally unstable to be trusted with a weapon as dangerous as a gun. So I believe that the NRA should make the legal age limit to be able to purchase a gun twenty one and older. This isn't me saying that someone over the age of 21 is more mentally stable but seeing as this is about school shootings I think an age restriction would be the best bet.
I also believe these incidents keep happening due to bullying, people not taking mental health disorders seriously, and teenagers feeling stuck in a bad situation where they feel their only way to feel safe is to harm/kill others or themselves.

    2. What is your initial reaction when you hear about an event like this?
I get confused as to why this happened in the first place especially where it’s a situation like this where the young man showed so many signs that he was going to go to his highschool and shoot as many kids as he could and, nobody thought to call the authorities, nobody called his guardians, or a hotline, or anything that could have prevented this.
    3. What do you think should be done to help insure things like this can be avoided?
The NRA should raise the legal age to be able to buy a gun to 21 and older.
Obama’s law saying people with mental health disorders are not able to buy firearms should be reinstated.
You should have to do a thorough background check on someone wanting to buy a gun.
Schools should always check in on students with mental disabilities whether they are in school, suspended, expelled, taking a day off, etc just check in make sure their okay, see if any changes need to be made, if anyone is bothering them small things just to make sure they're okay.
School security should be upgraded. I'm not saying they have to carry a firearm or a taser or some sort of weapon, Im saying that they should have cameras or a security desk right at the front entrance and if someone looks a little suspicious they can call someone up and say “hey there is a odd man near the school can somebody check it out”. They should also have a list of kids who are currently suspended or expelled or at risk.

  16. 1. I honestly think its to easy to buy guns in America that's why this keeps on happening
    2. I feel very sad and really bad for the families that lost their children. and that this keeps on happening you start getting used to it.
    3. This question is very simple a 10-year-old could answer it. We need a more strict gun control or this could be happening once a month.

  17. I think these incidents keep happening because people who sell guns don't check the ID's of people who buy the guns.

My initial reaction was feeling bad for the parents of the kids that were killed and for the students that survived and had the experience that.

I think that the people who sell the guns should double check the ID's of the people who they sell the guns to. It might be a lot of work but many lives will be saved.

  18. 1. Tragedies such as school and mass shootings continue to happen in the United States because in this country it is so simple for anyone to purchase a gun, specifically meant to kill, regardless if you have a mental disability. That, and we also have a president that claims this country needs more guns.
    2. To be honest, I was not surprised another school shooting happened. This is the eighteenth mass shooting to happen this year in a school and unfortunately it has become something that does not come across as a shock to me. This only happens in the United States and our political leaders don't want to bring gun control to the plate or do anything like that so these things are going to regularly happen.
    3. There were so many things that could have prevented this specific situation from happening. First of all, officials knew about this boy's mental record, violent social media threats and posts, abusive history, killing fetish, and overall that he needed help. To be honest, whenever school shootings like this happen, it's never the jock or cheerleader or the popular kid who carries it out. It's usually the socially awkward kid who had a terrible experience. These students could have not joked about hi disabilities and not joked about how he would shoot up the school. That does not excuse what he did, but if so many people anticipated this, including students and officials, why did no one do anything about it? If he was so mental and unstable, why was it legal for him to walk into a store and purchase a gun made for killing? Does it ever occur to anyone that if this kid were anything other than white that there would be so many laws against people of different race obtaining weapons? If Trump and his supporters are so scared of Muslims and Mexicans and claim they are all dangerous why are they not the ones shooting up schools? There are so many things students, officials, and our "excellent" president can do to ensure school shootings will not happen again. Students can stop picking on one another and speak up if they see a kid threatening a school or just being bullied in general, especially if you know they have mental issues. Officials can stop watching things happen and actually do something before a tragedy happens, like I don't know, get the kid help based on his record? And our president can stop pretending as if America is not the only country that has mass shootings like this because we are and there are things he can do and say that can make that stop but to him, guns are so important. Even though all these things can prevent another mass shooting, it'll probably happen again because this is the United States, pretty much the only country who deals with mass shootings at least once a month.
